Odera Umeh, Ph.D. Student - Montclair State University

Odera Umeh is a doctoral researcher in the Environmental Science and Management program at Montclair State University, where his work centers on the occurrence, fate, and transport of emerging contaminants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), microplastics, and heavy metals such as lead across New Jersey's groundwater and watersheds. He recently led a watershed-by-watershed statewide investigation of PFAS ("forever chemicals") in New Jersey, research supported by a NJWRRI/USGS grant and recognized with awards from the NJ American Water Works Association and the NJ Water Environment Association.

Odera holds master's degrees in Sustainability (Montclair State University) and Environmental Microbiology (Nnamdi Azikiwe University), and has authored 31+ peer-reviewed articles in leading environmental journals. He currently interns with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Safe Drinking Water and has completed advanced training through the U.S. EPA.

His research aligns closely with the mission of HDC-SETAC, understanding the behavior and toxicity of contaminants to protect water resources and public health across the Hudson and Delaware River regions. As a Student Representative Board Member, Odera looks forward to strengthening student engagement, connecting emerging scientists with environmental professionals, and supporting the chapter's meetings and outreach.
