Dr. Dibs Sarkar

Green Technologies for Remediation of PFAS in Soil and Water.

Dr. Sarkar is a broadly trained environmental geochemist with research interests in environmental remediation, risk assessment, and green technology development. He is a professor of environmental engineering and the founding director of Stevens Center for Sustainability at Stevens Institute of Technology. Dibs graduated with a PhD in geochemistry from the University of Tennessee and worked as a postdoctoral scientist in soil and water chemistry at the University of Florida. He is a Professional Geologist licensed in Texas. Thus far, Dibs has advised 35+ PhD and MS/ME students, 25+ postdoctoral associates, and many visiting scholars. He has published 200+ journal articles, 20 book chapters, and 300+ technical abstracts and conference proceedings. Dibs is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America. He is the founding principal of SIROM Scientific Solutions, LLC, an environmental R&D startup incorporated in New Jersey. He is the editor-in-chief of Springer's Current Pollution Reports and serves on the editorial board of several other journals.

Margie Turrin

Reshaping the Legacy of the Hudson River.

Professor Turrin has spent much of her career building field-work into science experiences for learners and stewards from youth to lifelong learners. Using the environment as classroom, lab and teacher she demonstrates the range of STEM concepts and practices we all incorporate in our lives daily while building authentic science data each experience. While her work has taken her from the Hudson River to the polar regions, her work on the Hudson has been foundational for much of her work. Her primary goal is to build direct connections between people and the environment, reclaiming a relationship that for many has been forgotten. This work has resulted in several local award winning education programs, including: River Summer (2005-2011) a platform for developing interdisciplinary undergraduate programs and the Day in the Life of the Hudson & Harbor (2003-present) produced in partnership with the DEC Hudson River Estuary Program, an annual K16 field based river sampling program that brings  ~5000 students, teachers and educators to the Hudson River to sample and data share. She has co-authored a book on using authentic data in science education, and many articles on the Hudson River. Turrin currently serves as Director of Educational Field Programs at Columbia’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and is on the board of The Hudson River Environmental Society and The Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System.

Topics for the 2026 Meeting:

  • Chemicals of emerging concern (e.g., PFAS, microplastics, pharmaceuticals and personal care products), including relevant research
  • Environmental toxicology and stress response
  • Environmental risk assessment, engineering, remediation, and restoration - with a focus on Superfund/hazardous waste sites and/or river cleanups in NJ and NY
  • Advances in research, analysis, and monitoring of chemical contaminants
  • Policy, management, and communication
